It's complete! The painting is finished. I've managed to finalize my grey portion to a color that I like (lots and lots of blending went into this). The 'sky' portion of the piece is heavily layered and incorporates a lot of colors, mainly oranges and reds and salmons, to give a fiery contrast to the smooth and relaxing green, interspersed with leaf-life forms. I put a lot of emphasis on a very infomral and drippy composition, that seems unappealing at first but is layered and rich upon further inspection.
I created this painting to challenge what a painting is often held to be - something pretty. It's not very aesthetically pleasing at all - the colors contrast, the drips and forms can be seen as sloppy, and it lacks an interesting or unique motif outside of the grey band. This is what I enjoy about it and why I am happy with the result - I acknowledge that the painting is actually quite unappealing, but it is so in a way that is layered and fun and detailed. Its an immersive experience (in fact, if this were hanging in a museum or gallery, I would invite people to touch it, instead of warn them away). It has texture and personality and soul, and that is what I like most about it. I do think that I could have gone down many more different roads with it, but I am happy with how it turned out (especially for basically my first legit painting I've ever really done). I think it's unique and I had a lot of fun making it and experimenting with colors, which is what I enjoy most when I paint. I have a few titles I'm pondering over and I am excited to try more painting opportunities in the future.
